• "a part or aspect of something abstract, especially one that is essential or characteristic"[1]
  • an element of the periodic table of elements
  • an entity that is part of HTML

In HTML, an element is a self-closing tag or an opening tag, its corresponding closing tag, and the content between said tags (both types may or may not have attributes and values). Elements are created with triangle brackets and other ASCII characters.[2] The style of elements can be controlled by one or more of cascading style sheets, "style" tags, the HTML attribute "style", and JavaScript code. When setting the style in a "style" tag or cascading style sheet, curly brackets and other ASCII characters are used to create selectors, properties, and values.[3]
